UNFPA Iraq Male Engagement Strategic Plan 2023-2026

About the Strategic Plan:

UNFPA CO Iraq is developing an actionable strategy for Iraq for working with men and boys for gender equality and promoting positive masculinities for the period between 2023 and 2026. 

The strategy will address the work on the transformation of gender stereotypes and harmful social norms contributing to gender-based violence and the barriers to access and utilisation of family planning by engaging men and boys to achieve the following:

A Complemented ongoing effort by civil society and government actors in Iraq to address gender inequity and GBV. 

B Systematised approach to better engage men and boys throughout UNFPA Gender and GBV-related programming, from the prevention to the response and the normative actions around promoting a more conducive legal and policy framework.

C Achieved change in behaviour and detrimental social norms within Iraq's humanitarian and development contexts.

This annual report shows how funds entrusted to UNFPA in 2021 contributed to improving the conditions and well-being of thousands of vulnerable women and young people across Iraq by preventing and protecting them from any form of GBV, providing them with free and equal access to essential sexual and reproductive health services and empowering them to make informed choices.

Publication

In Her Words aims to amplify the voices of adolescent girls in humanitarian settings throughout the Arab region, including Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, and the Whole of Syria. Today, several regions in the Arab states are coping with the lasting impacts of longstanding and emerging humanitarian situations. Both the Syria and Yemen crises have marked their tenth years, while recent developments in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Lebanon have resulted in additional displacements and disruptions in community networks, placing the lives and dignities of millions of people at risk.

National Guidelines on MHPSS Human Resources Profiles and Capacity Building

The guidelines aim to create a minimum-standards framework for the human resources recruited to lead MHPSS projects in Iraq. It also helps to plan the needed training so that field teams can provide the best level of care to individuals and communities in need.

Annual Report

The new country programme has four outcomes namely sexual reproductive health, adolescents and youth, gender equality and women's empowerment, and population dynamics. This comprehensive approach supports the country in fulfilling the commitments made in Nairobi in 2019. This report shows not only the achieved targets and milestones but also the impact of UNFPA efforts on women and girls lives and choices.

Addressing Unintended Pregnancy in the Arab Region Policy Brief 2019

Unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion are serious public health issues in the Arab region that often go ignored, jeopardizing the health of women and families and placing a burden on society as a whole. Although family planning services have expanded in the region, and a growing number of women are using modern contraceptives. However, rates of unintended pregnancy remain high. On average, two in five pregnancies are unplanned, and half of these unintended pregnancies result in abortion, which is illegal in Arab countries (except for Tunisia) and largely unsafe, putting women’s lives and health at risk.
