Baghdad, Iraq | 25 August 2024 - The "Basics of Journalism" project, a groundbreaking initiative led by UNFPA Iraq in partnership with Rudaw Media Network, has been honored with the Stevie® Award for the Best Social Program of the Year in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
Designed to empower women aspiring to enter the journalism field, the project addresses the critical need for access to training on accurate and ethical reporting, particularly on women’s issues. With a focus on skill development, knowledge building, and advocacy, the program equips participants with essential journalism tools, educates them on the UN's work in areas like climate change and sustainable development, and encourages them to champion the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and women’s rights.
Since its inception, the program has trained 159 women and girls across Iraq, with a goal of reaching 300 participants by the end of the year. The initiative, generously funded by the British Embassy in Iraq, is also supported by key partners such as SEED Foundation, Google News Initiative, and Internews.
Commenting on the award, Garik Hayrapetyan, Representative a.i. of UNFPA Iraq, said, "This recognition by the Stevie® Awards is a testament to the transformative power of partnerships in advancing women’s empowerment and sustainable development. Through our collaboration with Rudaw Media Network, we are building the skills of women journalists and strengthening their voices to champion issues that matter most to society. This award reinforces our commitment to fostering an inclusive, responsible, and dedicated media landscape to drive positive social change in Iraq and beyond."
The Stevie Award’s panel of experts praised the project as "a huge step forward and first of its kind for a joint venture between the United Nations and a Middle Eastern media."
The British Embassy in Baghdad also expressed pride in the recognition, stating, "We are proud to hear that the UK-funded 'Rudaw & UNFPA Women Training Programme' has been recognised under the 'Corporate Social Responsibility - Programme of the Year' category in the Stevie® awards this year, receiving the bronze award for the Middle East and North Africa."
This award underscores the impact of the "Basics of Journalism" project in empowering women and shaping a more equitable media landscape in Iraq.
