Baghdad, 26 November 2024 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to  the Government of Iraq, under the leadership of Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, on the successful completion of the country’s population and household census. This historic accomplishment, the first in 37 years, marks a transformative moment in Iraq’s journey toward enhanced demographic understanding and evidence-based governance.

The census, which reveals a population of 45,407,895, provides essential data on the distribution of urban and rural populations, household composition, and demographic characteristics. The statistics indicate that 70.3% of the population resides in urban areas and 29.7% in rural areas, with a near-equal gender distribution.

UNFPA commends the tireless efforts of the Iraqi government, local authorities, and all stakeholders involved in this complex and crucial process. This achievement not only reflects the commitment of Iraq to data-driven governance but also strengthens national planning and development initiatives. “UNFPA reaffirms its commitment to continuing technical support throughout the census process, particularly during the post-enumeration phase. Our collaboration will focus on ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the data collected, which is essential for effective implementation of programs and policies aimed at improving the lives of all Iraqis.” Garik Hayrapetyan, UNFPA Representative a.i in Iraq, said.

“We look forward to working closely with the Iraqi government and other partners to leverage the insights gained from this census to foster sustainable development and enhance the well-being of communities across the nation.” he added.

Once again, congratulations to the Government of Iraq, and thank you for your dedication to advancing the future of Iraq through this significant achievement.
