Job Description

The Position:

The population of Iraq is estimated at 40 million, the young people in the age group of 10-30 years constitute 41% of the total population of Iraq, with 28 percent between 15-29 years. Only 45% of boys and 43% of girls completed secondary education, whereas 67.9% of boys attended neither early childhood nor primary education. While the recently conducted National Adolescent and Youth survey 2019, the net school enrolment rate for males and females was 94%; this goes down to 55% in secondary and 28% in higher education. Looking at unemployment, 27.5% of youth aged 15-24 years were unemployed at the time when the survey was conducted. The global pandemic has exacerbated the situation for many young people in Iraq, creating major disruption to young people’s education and training, employment and access to economic opportunities and livelihoods.

In close collaboration with UNFPA and UNICEF country offices, the Youth Analyst contributes to the coordination of the youth support efforts and initiatives among the UN agencies operating in Iraq, and provides technical and advisory support to the UN leadership in the country to accelerate the implementation and monitoring of the UN Youth 2030 Strategy and the adoption of Iraq’s 2030 National Youth Vision and the costed plan of youth vision 2030.

The position is located in the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) and reports to the Head of Office and the UN Resident Coordinator. The Youth Analyst will ensure day-to-day coordination among UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes on the ground in support of the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 UN Strategy on Youth and its five priority areas (i. Engagement, participation and advocacy; ii. Informed and healthy foundations; iii. Economic empowerment through decent work; iv. Youth and human rights; and v. Peace and resilience building). This will include mainstreaming youth in the UN Socio-Economic Framework for the COVID-19 response, in the UN Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF) and the yearly updated CCAs and acting as the liaison for national and local partners, youth organizations and networks. The Youth Analyst works closely with UNFPA and UNICEF on implementing the National Youth Vision, , and oversees reporting to the pilot youth scorecard for the UN in Iraq.

You will report directly to the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (UNRCO) and UNFPA Deputy Representative

How you can make a difference:

UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.  UNFPA’s strategic plan (2022-2025), reaffirms the relevance of the current strategic direction of UNFPA and focuses on three transformative results: to end preventable maternal deaths; end unmet need for family planning; and end gender-based violence and harmful practices. These results capture our strategic commitments on accelerating progress towards realizing the ICPD and SDGs in the Decade of Action leading up to 2030. Our strategic plan calls upon UN Member States, organizations and individuals to “build forward better” while addressing the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on women’s and girls’ access to sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights, recover lost gains and realize our goals.

In a world where fundamental human rights are at risk, we need principled and ethical staff who embody these international norms and standards and will defend them courageously and with full conviction.

UNFPA is seeking candidates that transform, inspire and deliver high impact and sustained results; we need staff who are transparent, exceptional in how they manage the resources entrusted to them and who commit to deliver excellence in programme results.
